HELLO! WELCOME TO MY PC / LAPTOP PERFORMANCE GUIDE. TODAY I WILL BE SHOWING YOU TIPS WHICH WILL HELP SPEED UP THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR SYSTEM. (PLEASE NOT ONLY FOR WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEMS)

IN EACH STEP IN WHICH I GUIDE YOU I WILL EXPLAIN WHAT I'M DOING SO YOU CAN BE CERTAIN OF WHAT YOU ARE ACTUALLY MODIFYING WITHIN YOUR SYSTEM

THIS GUIDE WILL HELP ANYONE WITH A OLD POTATO SYSTEM TO A HIGH END GAMING PC!

    TIP ONE : BIOS UPDATE

First off, what is the bios?BIOS is firmware used to perform hardware initialization during the booting process, and to provide runtime services for operating systems and programs. The BIOS firmware comes pre-installed on a personal computer's system board, and it is the first software to run when powered on

Each manufacterer has a different way of updating, it is all done through the bios but some can be done from inside without having to download them manually, I will not tell you how to install, please search your motherboards name and search how to update (motherboards name) to ensure it is does correctly, this is how you do it for my board so I will just show you so you have an idea

How do I update it? First off if you don't already you will need to find out which motherboard you have, if you already know skip this step

To find out which motherboard you have click the windows icon in the bottom left of your screen (Unless you changed the placement of your task bar) Once you click this icon you will see a long search bar

In this search bar you want to type "systen information" click on the little icon of the monitor and open the programme, once you are in the programme go to the right hand side where you see a list of "Items" and "Values" you want to go to the search bar, type in "Baseboard Product" and click "Find Next" or just hit "ENTER" on your keyboard, once that has been completed your motherboards name will be highlighted, like mine "MPG X570 GAMING PRO CARBON WIFI (MS-7B93)" upload_2020-1-20_1-3-17.png

Now that you have located the name of your motherboard you want to google the name of your motherboard and then the word "bios" after it, in this case I will search "MPG X570 GAMING PRO CARBON WIFI" Do not worry about putting the letters and numbers in brackets as that is just which bios version you are on. upload_2020-1-20_1-7-2.png
When on the manufacterers website (MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON THEIR WEBSITE!) you want to search for the "BIOS" or "SUPPORT" tab to download the latest bios upload_2020-1-20_1-8-45.png

You will now see a list of bios updates in which you can download, you should see version and date so download and update it upload_2020-1-20_1-9-46.png

    TIP TWO : DRIVER UPDATES

Secondly, you will want to install all updates for your drivers, specifically graphics card and CPU drivers. First you will need to find out which CPU and GPU you have, download a tool called "AIDA64" and download the free trial here is where you can DOWNLOAD the programme, once you download and install the programme open it up and click the computer icon

Once that is done you want to click the "summary" tab, on the left hand side you will see a list of of specifications, you will want to look for "CPU TYPE" and "VIDEO ADAPTER" (my trial has expired so this is a google ss) upload_2020-1-20_1-25-15.png

Once this is figuired out simple google the name of your CPU and "Drivers" eg : "Ryzen 7 3700x drivers" and then the name of your gpu and then "Drivers" eg : "RTX 2070 super drivers".

PLEASE NOTE YOU WILL DOWNLOAD FROM THE FOLLOWING WEBSITES, DO NOT DOWNLOAD FROM ANYWHERE ELSE.

    INTEL.COM FOR INTEL CPUS

    AMD.COM FOR RYZEN CPUS

    AMD.COM FOR AMD GPUS

    NVIDIA.COM FOR NVIDIA GPUS

Once you have downloaded and installed your drivers you are done

TIP : THREEWINDOWS / RYZEN POWER PLANS

A power plan is a collection of hardware and system settings that manages how computers use and conserve power. A power plan is also known as a power scheme. You can customize these existing plans for your systems, create new plans that are based on the existing plans, or create a new power plan from scratch

To change your power plan you want to go to your search bar and type "Choose a power plan" and then open the battery icon application. Once you have clicked this you will see a few power plans but you will want to select "Ultimate Performance" (IF ON INTEL CPU).

The chances are you won't see this so you’ll need to open the Command Prompt or PowerShell with administrative privileges. For Command Prompt, hit Start, type “cmd” into the search box, right-click the Command Prompt result, and choose “Run As Administrator.” For PowerShell, hit Windows+X and choose the “Windows PowerShell (Admin) option.

Once you have done this type in this command and hit enter.

    COMMAND : "powercfg -duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61"

For RYZEN cpu's you should see "AMD Ryzen High Performance" and "AMD Ryzen Balanced" Select AMD Ryzen High Performance, if you do not see this its because you did not properly install your chipset (CPU drivers).

    TIP FOUR : XMP

What is XMP? Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) is a specification serving as an extension to the standard JEDEC SPD specifications developed by Intel. XMP is intended to make overclocking easier and more accessible to new users through profiles and predefined overclocking configurations that are known to be stable, in this case we are going to be enabling XMP to improve our ram speed and allow it to run at its advertised speed.

RAM, or Random-access memory is a form of computer memory that can be read and changed in any order, typically used to store working data and machine code. A random-access memory device allows data items to be read or written in almost the same amount of time irrespective of the physical location of data inside the memory.

Each "RAM" kit has a speed it is advertised at, my specific ram kit is advertised at a speed of 3600MHZ but until you enable XMP it will now run at that speed, the higher the speed the better. Not all ram can have XMP enabled so please be aware if you do not have the option to enable XMP do not worry, your ram kit is just not compatable.

To enable an XMP profile you will need to enter your bios. You should know how to do this because you should have updated your bios, but like motherboards everyone has a different ram kit so please search "How to enable XMP for (insert ram name))"

TIP FIVE : WINDOWS SETTINGS / REMOVING BLOATWARE

Modifying windows settings can increase performance.

As I am running out of screen shots (max 10) I will link you 2 videos teaching you how to :

    1. Change windows settings for highest avalible performance
    2. Remove bloatawre for extra performance

Bloatware, if you don't know is on all systems meaning they sart off slower than they should be, clogged with unnecessary preloaded software. Known as bloatware (or a number of less complimentary terms) this software comes in many different forms. Most bloatware isn't dangerous, but it can slow down your system and take up space on your hard drive.

To change windows settings click HERE
    To remove bloatware click HERE

TIP SIX : CLEARING THE SYSTEM AND REMOVING VIRUSES

If you are not aware, having viruses and junk files can drastically decrease performance, infact if you are having trouble with bad fps it could all be down to a virus, a virus could also increase ping as it can use all of your bandwidth.

Be sure to download malwarebytes HERE. Once you open malwarebytes you want to run a scan and quaranteen all files and delete them.

Next make sure to download CCLEANER HERE. Once you open CCLEANER go to the "ANALYZE" tab and select "Analyze" in the middle of the screen, once you click this it will ask you if you would like to close all browsers or skip, please skip as it ensures any junk is removed, once you have done that it will scan for junk and trackers and you once it has completed simply click "Clean All" and it removed those trackers and junk.

Now you want to clear all temp files.

What are temp files? Temporary files, or foo files, are files created to temporarily contain information while a new file is being made. In other words, when creating a file there will always be a backup, meaning in more storage being used which = less performance.

To remove these temp files press WINDOWS KEY + R at the same time and type "%temp%" (remove speach marks) then click "ENTER" or "Ok". You should see a whole folder FULL of files (if you have not cleared this before) all you want to do is press CTRL + A and then delete the files, some of them will say it cannot be deleted and to try again, some will ask for administrative privileges, just click allow for adminstrative privileges and skip for the ones which will not let you delete. The ones which you can't delete are not allowing you to delete because it is open and running in your pc, for example if your discord crashes and there is a log of it, it will be created there and because (if it is) discord is running it will now allow you to delete the file.

TIP SEVEN : OPTIMIZING NVIDIA CONTROL PANNEL / AMD RADEON SOFTWARE.

First off, what is "NVIDIA CONTROL PANNEL" and "AMD RADEON SOFTWARE"?.

NVIDIA CONTROL PANNEL : The NVIDIA Control Panel is a modest selection of checkboxes, sliders and dropdown menus but, it is the key to getting the most out of your GeForce graphics card. A few tweaks here and there can make any game sharper, clearer and smoother.

AMD RADEON SOFTWARE : AMD Radeon Software is a device driver and utility software package for Advanced Micro Devices's graphics cards and APUs.

If you have an NVIDIA GPU you will want to download, install and open NVIDIA CONTROL PANNEL.

If you have an AMD GPU you will want to download AMD RADEON SOFTWARE.

I'm going to leave a video showing the best settings for each software, I would show screenshots but my limit has been reached (10).

    NVIDIA CONTROL PANNEL : HERE

    AMD RADEON SOFTWAREA : HERE

TIP EIGHT : MODS / CLIENT

This tip can be VERY important, having a specific mod called "optifine" can help improve fps.

OptiFine is a Minecraft optimization mod.

It allows Minecraft to run faster and look better with full support for HD textures and many configuration options.

The official OptiFine description is on the Minecraft Forums.

Next off is client, when I say this I don't mean hacked clients, do not cheat or get perma banned L.

    I mean PVP Clients

    Some popular PVP clients are ;

    Lunar Client
    PVPLounge Client
    Badlion Client
    Hyperium

If you are unsure of which client to use check out THIS video by Intel Edits, he has an amazing comparison between the most popular clients.

Clients can help improve FPS by having "FPS BOOST" options inside of the client, giving you settings to optimize inside of the client resulting in more fps.

My go to client and what I use on the daily is Lunar Client, it is a user friendly client and has more than enough mods than I can need, it is avalible for 1.7.10 and 1.8.9.

Inside of these clients (and regular minecraft) you can decide if you want to dedicate RAM, the reccomended RAM to allocate is 4GB. But for maximum performance dedicate half.

If you do not know how to dedicate RAM simply google "How to dedicate RAM in Minecraft (client name, you do not need to put a client name if you use regular forge / minecraft with no mods).

    I have 32GB of ram so I allocate a whole 16.

If you are recording I reccomend allocating half, if you are recording / streaming I reccomend dedicating half, then take away 2, to allow your recording software to run smoothly without any hitches / fps drops whilst recording / streaming so in my case i will allocate 14 when recording / streaming.

Please note always try to have at least 4GB of ram allocated if you cannot do not worry as much, might be worth a ram upgrade though :p.

TIP NINE : IN GAME SETTINGS

Next and one of the most important settings is ingame settings.

Changing certain settings like render distance can DRAMATICALLY increase fps and overall smoothness of the game.

A majority of people play on 1.7.10, 18.9 and 1.14.4 (highest optifine version!), I will leave videos on each version to ensure you have the best settings possible for your version.

    1.7.10 : VIDEO

    1.8.9 : VIDEO

    1.14.4 : VIDEO

TIP TEN : DEFRAGMENT AND OPTIMIZE DRIVES

Drive defragmentation is a process inside of windows which allows you to optimize your drives to help your computer run more efficiently, they don't always need to be optimized so analyzing your drives is how you can find out if they need to be optmized.

To analyze your drives go to the windows search bar and type "Defragment And Optimise Drives". Once you have done this you will see a colorful icon, click that to open the application to begin the process. Once you are in the application highlight the drive in which you would like to defrag / optimize.

It is always best and reccomended to AT LEAST do the one where your operating system is located. Once you have highlighted the drive you want to defrag / optimize click "ANALYZE".

This step decides whether your drive needs to be defragmented, if your drive shows 5 or more % of fragmentation, you should then click the button "OPTIMIZE". The longer you have used your computer without defraging, the higher the %'age will be.

Now you have defragmented your drives, i'm not going to show you a step to do so you don't have to do this step manually, rather it will do it automatically for you.

When in the application, you will see at the bottom "Scheduled Optmization".

On the right hand side of this tab you will see "Change Settings" click that and follow my settings provided in the screen shot below. upload_2020-1-20_23-23-32.png

    TIP ELEVEN : DISCORD SETTINGS

This next step is actually a fairly unknown process in which not alot of people know about, you wouldn't think it, but there is a setting which is automatically enabled inside of the programme "Discord" which hogs GPU usuage and priority resulting in less performance being used inside of your game.

The setting is called "Hardware Acceleration". The setting enables discord to use more of your GPU power to allow discord to be more smooth, discord is a app for talking to friends, you don't need this setting enabled as it hardly makes a difference between how smooth it is.

Before and after this setting was enabled I couldn't tell that discord was smoother when it was enabled. But what I did notice is I had alot less hitches and FPS drops inside of my game.

Now, how to disable it? To disable this option click the settings button in the bottom left of discord (Next to your name and profile picture). Navigate to "APP SETTINGS" from there go to > Appearance > Advanced > Hardware Acceleration > Tick it off (so the button is grey).

    TIP TWELVE : TIMER RESOLUTION

This next step is known by many but not enough, the programme is called "Timer Resolution". What it does is stops the CPU from downclocking which can infact dramatically boost fps.

    To download the programme HERE

Once you have opended the programme its super simple from here, simply click "Maximum" and then minimize the programme, be sure not to close it other wise the settings won't take affect.

TIP THIRTEEN : DISABLE GAME MODE

Some of you may or may not know that game mode (an option inside of windows 10) actually reduces performance, I know it sounds stupid, because it actually is, but its the truth. You can Google about it.

To disable gamemode search "Game Mode Settings" in your windows search bar and tick it so it is set to "Off".

    TIP FOURTEEN : WINDOWS UPDATE

Now this tip seems pretty self explanatory, but alot of people avoid doing this just like BIOS and driver updates.

Windows update could not only protect your system from hackers, it can increase performance and help your system run smoother. All it takes is a simple update and restart.

Windows updates are usually automatic but if you are running the Windows 10 PRO version, there is a feature which allows you to PAUSE updates for SEVEN DAYS, this is useful for some people but as regular gamers you will have no use for this, please make sure your updates are not paused and that you frequently update your operating system.

    TIP FIFTEEN : OVERCLOCKING

What is overclocking? Overclocking is a popular technique for gaining out a little more performance from a system, specifically a individual part, EG : CPU, GPU, RAM.

We've already done a RAM overclock, we enabled XMP which is a AUTOMATIC overclock.

    There are 2 types of overclocks ;

    1. Automatic
    2. Manual

To ensure the highest amount of saftey we will be doing a MANUAL overclock

    PLEASE NOTE :

DO NOT TRY UNLESS YOU HAVE AN NVIDIA RTX GRAPHICS CARD!

THE BIGGEST ISSUE WITH OVERCLOCKING IS THE REDUCTION IN A COMPONENT'S LIFESPAN. YOU CAN OVERCLOCK A CPU, GPU, MOTHERBOARD OR RAM, BUT SENDING INCREASED VOLTS GRADUALLY DAMAGES THESE COMPONENTS. DAMAGE IS CAUSED BY HEAT GENERATED FROM INCREASED POWER!

*DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, THE VIDEO IS FOLLOWING EXTREMELY SAFE GUIDELINES IN WHICH YOU SHOULD FOLLOW FOR THE BEST RESULTS BUT IF YOU MESS UP OR SOMETHING GOES WRONG I AM NOT ACCOUNTABLE*!

Now, if that didn't scare you away lets continue

Today we will be overclocking the GPU (Graphics Card) unfortunatly if you have an AMD GPU you are missing out here, not because you can't overclock your AMD GPU's, its because as far as i'm aware there are no automatic overclocking methods for AMD GPU's

Here I will leave a video showing you how to overclock your NVIDIA RTX GPU

Video by MSI themselves : HERE

THANK YOU FOR READING MY GUIDE!

I HOPE I HELPED INCREASE THE SPEED AND OVERALL PERFORMANCE OF YOUR SYSTEM WHILST INCREASING FPS :)

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I HELPED YOU AS IT WOULD BE VERY GREAT TO READ

    ENJOY THOSE FRAMES <3

Overall a good guide but I personally think that you should add a notice on tip 6 about CCleaner that you shouldn't run it when you are getting ssed just in case. and I'm not sure if this helps or anything but with my experience, my pc seemed a bit smoother when I optimize/defragment my drive once in a while so I think you should also add that to your guide.
